Barbie
is an icon that transcends
stereotyped beauty. At the
end of the sixties she
already had “coloured”
friends and relatives,
disturbing the right-minded
WASP America. From the
eighties on, she epitomized
ebony-skinned and afro
hair-styled disco-divas and
in the nineties she was
dressed by innovative
African American Stylists.
Even Vogue, in 2009
dedicated a special issue to
the Black Barbie dolls.
Antonio Russo, chairman of
Doll Collector Club Italia,
and Michela Zampini have
selected more than 30
African American Barbie
dolls, friends and relatives
from the last 40 years of
production.
